Yes the spacer and cog, also just check the tention in your chain, you may need a chain tentioner, most mtb guys run them. If the chain is in decent condition you can use it, if not I would go for a half link chain.

I'm also busy with a low budget SS build.I got a chain tensioner from Rapidé and got a few old cassettes from my lbs.I'm planning on taking apart the cassettes and using the spacers between the cogs to alighn the rear cog with the chainring up front, going to use the same cogs from the broken up cassette and the old 9speed chain with the tensioner to keep the chain tight.

Pretty good idea, yeah I will get the tensioner from Rapide as well and the single speed kit with spacers but I am going to have to look for a cheap buy from junkmail or so can't use the bike I wanted to use, sigh.

Just finished the build. Here are some pics.Started out with a few cassettes and the tensioner.Took them apart for the spacers and selected the cogs I wanted to try out.A 16t and a 18t.post-54774-1429449864,7416.jpgpost-54774-1429449885,1386.jpg

for what its worth I have heard that fitting the cog backwards (if it came from a cassette) helps with chain retention.
