Which fork for Giant Anthem X 29er?

I have a TA Reba, the 100mm version. Coming from an entry level Suntour, I only have good things to say about the Reba. Excellent stiffness and damping and light as well. A friend rode the Silver and it does not even come close to the Reba in terms of performance, as it is an entry level fork. I assume the Revelation would be just as good. Rather spend a bit more if possible and get the Reba/Revelation

Your entry level Suntour may have been a coil fork which they also do plenty of. This would also account for a massive improvement. I went from a Rockshox XC30 to my Epicon and the ride difference cannot even be described.

This is my ride with a 120mm Epicon:

Time to go fork shopping. Can someone please explain what's wrong with Fox. They seem pretty popular with them manufacturers or do they just opt for price

Expensive

CTD is ****

Expensive

Evolution line is poo

Issues with compression damping were sorted.for 2015, but the rev and Reba are just better.

Plus they're expensive

I get it. Any idea who in CT carries a decent range of RS. Plenty of Rebas but Rev seem to be rather scarce

post-54517-0-40564400-1436812290_thumb.jpgAnthem with 120mm Epicon and some mud. I will be replacing this with something like a Reba/X-Fusion/Fox but until then it's OK. The Epicon will go to my son's HT which has a heavy coil fork which is terrible on anything more than smooth gravel.

Hey bullet77,

Do you mind sharing your weight and fork settings. obviously riding style and terrain usually differ but just curious.

I'm 92kg fully kitted and have sag set at about 30%. The rebound is in the middle because I can't feel much difference whether it's fully open or closed. I ride at Hopewell for ST close to town and also a fair bit of gravel road riding in Longmore and Elands road. My lock-out has stopped working but apparently it's a build up of dirt and just needs a good clean in the switch.

Please share your settings for the Epicon.

For the Epicon, did you need to replace headset as well?

Yes, the Epicon apparently only comes in straight steerer, I wasn't to happy about this but went ahead anyway. For R2700 brand new at the time it was a good decision.

Depends which frame it is. If it's an OD2 frameset, then you'd have to get a new headset as it is the 1.25" stupid thing. You'd have to do this for pretty much any fork that doesn't have an OD2 steerer, which is basically all of them.

Current framesets don't have that stupid sizing standard - it's back to regular tapered, so all you'd need to get if you got a straight-steerer fork is a reducer for the bottom, and those are cheap as chips.

I am 75kg fully kitted. Don't know percentage sag but it's around 25% I would imagine. The pressure is at 75Psi, I add another 5Psi if I am expecting a few jumps and bumps before setting off though.

The rebound is set 7 clicks from fully in but, as you have said, there isn't much of a difference so fiddle with it by 1-2 clicks either way. I have settled on 7 out though.

I think there are 16 clicks if I recall.

My lockout has broken twice at the fork, where it screws down. Both times warrantied. Looks like it was poor cable routing that was at fault, LBS did the install luckily.

Mine is tapered, somebody wanted to shift the straight they had stock of perhaps.

The LBS set up the fork for me according to my weight, not sure of the Psi.

You probably right about the straight steerer being in stock but I remember him saying they were only available in straight. PE only has 4 or 5 bike shops and I've had at least 1 bad experience with each shop in the 2 odd years I've been cycling.

I'm still looking for a 120mm fork for my Anthem X29er, can you still get new SR Suntour Epicons? I put a secondhand Epicon XC on my son's hardtail and it is butter smooth.

I don't know if the XC can be adjusted to 120mm.

Yeah, the shops seem to blow hot and cold wrt service.

It seems your weight, in kg, is the Psi amount you should be starting on. Maybe?? I know at the back, on the standard Fox shock, I am running my weight, in lbs, as the Psi amount which seems to work.

My LBS has a new SR Suntour Epicon, although it is a straight steerer. I'm sure you should be able to find one. The next model up is the X1 which is even better for about R300 more.

They do a carbon crown model which weighs almost nothing for a pretty good price too. Under R4000 brand new with a warrantee.

What is it specifically about 120mm. I can get a Revelation 130mm but it can be dropped to 120mm if necessary. Would 130mm alter the geometry too much and adversely affect the handling?
