OT : Which Laptop

Thug

Recommended Posts

I'm in the market for a new laptop and was wondering from the IT gurus out here what I should be looking at.

Ideally I would like to get a Mac, but compatibility issues with some of the programs we run would mean that I'd end up having to run a virtual Windows box under Mac, which kind of defeats the object.

Budget (including OS) is around R14 - R15k.

I'm looking at a Mecer with the following components:

- Intel Pentyn Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo Processor T8300 2.40Ghz

- Fujitsu 160GB SATA Hard Disk Drive (7200rpm)

- 2 x 2048MB DDR2-667 SO-Dimm Memory

Is the Intel Merom core better than a Santa Rosa core ?

What are Fujitsu Sata drives like ?

Comments & thoughts welcome!

I have only and will only ever own a DELL computer.

http://www.dell.co.za

You can configure your pc online, it is made up for you in Ireland and delivered. The prices maybe a little more than some thing bought at say Incredible... but you get a next business day on site technician if your pc bombs out... you can pay a little extra to upgrade it to 3 years.

Their new model Dell XPS laptops and desktops are awesome. I'm looking at getting myself a new 13" XPS laptop in May!

Most of SA's biggest corporations use Dell machines... Standard Bank for one.

Config your laptop on there... and tell us the price...

Get HP.

I agree but you do pay a premium for the brand name. We have been supplying a lot of Acer's recently and have had very few problems and Acer's support is generally good.

You can normally get an equivalent Acer at about 10-15% cheaper than an HP.

I know people who have had problems with their Acers and they always have to go to Jhb to be fixed (although not a problem for you).

I've had a LG for 2 years now and I love it.  I've recently installed Windows Vista and its running beautifully.

4gb or ram in a laptop. Dude, what do yo want to do. Oh btw. You must run a 64bit version of Windows to use 4gb or ram. Otherwise you will just get 3.2gb as that is the limit on 32bit windows.

R14k inclusive of VAT and delivery? How does that compare.

XPS don't suit you?

HP, I am on my second one now the first is 9 years old and still runs.

Mrs HammerHed still uses the first one for architectural design work when we travel. Win 98 and it runs fine, albeit very slowly. Ready for a Linux upgrade.

My second HP notebook is now 2 years old and had no hassles at all.

2gb ram is cheap enough these day but looking at running Vista Ultimate as the OS which is fully 64bit .
