Hello!! I am very new to all of this maintain biking and indoor trainers and stuff and wanted to know: if I buy a trainer wheel for my bike does it have to be the same size as the wheels currently on my bike? I have 29" wheels on my bike and wanted to know if it would make a difference buying a differnt size to use with my indoor trainer.

Most indoor trainers won't be able to take a 29" wheel, especially not with a mtb tyre. So get a 26er or even a road wheel and use it on the trainer. I use a cheap 26er wheel on my indoor trainer and it works fine. Just put a phone book or something similar under the front wheel to level the bike out.

Hey there, thanks for the reply!! So another possibly stupid question, will any back wheel I buy fit on my bike or do i need something specific for my bike? I have a silverback sola 4. Someone also told me to get a trainer tyre, so basically I'm going to buy a rim and fit a trainer tyre??

Yeah a trainer tyre or slick tyre will work, or even a road tyre if you are going to use a road wheel.

As far as I know, any wheel should work, as long as it has quick release skewers, like the ones on your wheels now.

Also, make sure whatever cassette you put on the trainer wheel, that it is the same speed as your current cassette (8 speed I think?)

What trainer will you be using?

I have the cycleops supermagneto , 29" wheels do work but with a standard mtb tire its quite noisy, id suggest using a trainer specific tire or slicks, i think other cycleops trainers do also support 29' size tires.

I only use my trainer with my road bike, running my normal Continental Gatorskin slicks and it works fine. Not sure if you get any trainer specific tyres, but I doubt I'd shell out for that personally.

Don't run your MTB tyres on there, you'll just wear the tread unnecessarily.

To add to this topic as a newbie also. What would be a decent trainer for about R2k? There's just soo much out there so I really don't know where to start looking.

Wont using a 26" wheel / tyre on your 29 spec mtb change your gear ratios?

Decent trainers will take a 29er wheel if you use a slick tyre.
