Advice on cheap road bike purchase

Hi guys

I would like to hear your advice on a road bike purchase.

I am an avid athlete, but can't run hard anymore due to recurring injury. Now I am looking into getting a bike. The search started with hardtail mtb's, but soon I realised that I'm not in the income bracket for mtb (yet).

While I am saving up for my dream bike, I would like to get into road racing / club rides etc. This should keep me occupied for a year or 3. So now I am strongly considering to buy a budget road bike. My vitals: 27 years old, 184cm and 83kg, drawn to hipster bikes, lives in Cape Town, loves cardiovascular flagellation.

The question is the following: do I immediately spend R2500 on this: http://stellenbosch.olx.co.za/trek-470-road-bike-for-sale-iid-802641081Or do I wait a month or 3 to get a more modern road bike in the R4000-5000 ball park? The cost of ugrading the Trek might quickly go over the additional R3K spent. But I am on a shoestring budget, and don't really want to wait a day longer before I start trapping up and down Kloof Nek.

Your advice would be much appreciated.

Gerhard

looks like a nice bike

that frame may be to big for you im the exact same size as you and it would be too big for me (if it isn't my bad)

and its hard to say anything about wether its worth buying without info on the components and wheels condition etc

if you are looking for a slightly more pedigree old school style bike - lots of them pop up on here for sale some for slightly more money (some aren't) but some are awfully cool if you like that kind of bike and want to do a bit of cleaning up and replacing a few basic bits

to buy a bike like that trek and throw money at it wouldn't be my idea of a good way to spend my money but it isnt my money ... :whistling:

keep an eye on the classifieds on here for a while is what id do or place a wanted add

Thanks for the replies everyone, much appreciated. It does seem that the better bet would be to wait it out, as my competitive nature would soon outweigh the novelty of an older bike. Just not always the easiest option to be patient!
