Hi Everyone,

Its been a few years since i was last on a bike or pedal powered at least... I used to ride BMX dirt and sold my last to transition to MTB but then life caught up with me and i never got down to it... I live in PMB id say a 10 min ride from cascades bike park. Ive started to look into what direction i should go as a new starte on MTB.

I am a huge DH fan, but it would be just silly to get a DH bike and end up not enjoying it. Essentially i want something that will handle DH terrain but still be able to peddle uphill ive had so many mixed opinions from people, some have said get a jump bike, others have said all mountain will do, and others have been like screw it get a DH bike suck it up and carry / push back up the mountain...

give me your insider opinions!!!

Enduro/ AM more or less the same category. Looking at 160mm - 180mm of travel

Trail bikes are generally in the 120-130mm travel region and are a cross between XC and more technical trail riding.

So the choice becomes alot easier when you decide on how much travel you wanna use and going to use. Also with more travel the slacker the geometry

I'd suggest something in the 140-160mm ranges. Lots of GREAT options there, that can do truly everything.

yep, that's your best bet. Even on shuttle days I still take my trail bike. She handles everything. But mostly because my downhill bike is in a state and I'm too broke to fix it.

I have a DJ bike too. Still. Always take the trail bike. mmmmhhhhh....

Dude. Took the dirtjumpxchardtail thing to G Spot and coetzenberg. DAMN, was that FUN!!!

150mm fork, small frame, 780mm bars and a 40mm stem. Singlespeed. The hills were TORTURE (I pushed a LOT) but man, was that thing fun. Like an oversized BMX.

Wouldn't use it as a long ride jobbie, but as a play bike! Sjoe!

for cascades - get a 140mm to 160mm travel full suspension bike ... (All mountain / Enduro / Trail bike). ...

You will handle everything at Cascades on that bike (including the DH) and be able to pedal up the hills too.

We have a good couple of riders racing provincial DH on their all mountain bikes and they handle just fine,

A DH bike restricts you to shuttle-only ... so unless you have someone to ferry you up the hill every weekend - an all mtn bike is the best bet.

DONT get a jump bike ...

Whenever I ride G and eden I think about taking the jump bike. Its the perfect place for bikes like that. Keep saying I will. Don't know why I chicken out.

Which Cascades are you refering to Nige? KZN?

Edit: Myles, you been to Cascades in Paarl yet? How do you think a AM bike will go on that? (LOOKS FLIPPEN STEEP!!)

EDIT version 2: Sorry Nige...my eyes are affected by my headache etc and I just didnt read the OP ...I was trying to see where he was from and then read the "pmb" part...thought with Myles quick reply he knew of him.

Thanks so much for the feedback! this might be broad but any specific bikes you can mention i have a look at?

On a side note i will probably build up a jump bike for that purpose later on, the place ive moved too has mega potential for an epic build spot!

well Jono Philogene raced his Specialized Enduro to 2nd overall yesterday in the DH ... so go chat to Craig Paul at Minnaars Cycles near cascades - he can hook you up with one of those...

But it depends on your budget - I have a Santa Cruz Nomad and can do the full DH on that thing ...

Otherwise there are Banshee Bikes and Transition in JHB ... ??

Or a Scott Genius from Leighs Cycle Centre in Durban?
