Eish, dad bought me a Nishiki Altron back in '93 for R 1000. Rode the absolute crap out of it, broke 2 (rigid) forks, couple of derailleurs etc. By the time it was stolen in '99 it was pretty much XT front to back.

Rode a few bikes since, all borrowed or rented, planning on buying a fullsuss over Christmas.

Hi Guys,

I am pretty new to mountain biking and also very new to the forum. I am in the market for an entry level mountain bike (29er hardtail) and the homework is coming on nicely. I was amazed at the sheer volume of information available and I must admit, also a bit overwhelmed at first. I wasn’t surprised to find that this exact same topic has been doing the rounds over and over again, seeing the volumes of mountain bikes on our roads. For this reason I won’t be asking the usual “best bike for budget?” question, but rather “what was your first entry level bike?”.

Information I am most interested in include:

  • Bike?
  • Cost?
  • Overall experience (i.e. would you choose differently if given the chance)?

P.S. By “entry level” I mean not more than R10K.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Cheers

Started off with a 2008 Avalanche AX250, cost around R2800 at the time.

Overall experience? I thoroughly enjoyed the bike. Was my first time entering races so at the time I didn't even think of owing another bike, although I will admit I had an eye on a certain GT Zaskar.

Started MTB sometime in 93 or 94. Bought a steel rigid Giant AT(X?) 760 from a windsurfing buddy. Cantilever brakes. The stem was about 150mm! Everything steel including bars and stem. 3x7 Shimano gears. Upgraded it with a truly horrible RST coil fork which it still wears today. These days it lives on smallholding somewhere near Lanseria with my boet and gets ridden once in blue moon.

When the paint job got all scrappy I sanded down to the metallic purple base coat and resprayed with a few layers of clear Glatex8....turned out surprisingly well.....

2010 Matts Merida TFS300 - R6,500

She carried me to MTB romance and general love of exercise.

Many many 1000's of km's on this pony. Currently stripped and waiting for my finances to facilitate rebirth as a 26" SS. Rigid fork if I can find one.

Love this bike soo much, did my first Magalies Monster on it.
