Help, advice with kids 24 inch

Hi there

I recently acquired a Silverback Eclipse 24 for my second kid. My sister had it on her farm and my nephew recently got a new bike. Unfortunately it has not been looked after and  needs some work and since I didn’t pay for it, its worth doing.  So I have had a good close look at it and the list is not to bad, the worst is the forks ..they have a fair amount of rust on the stanchions  and it would be nice to replace them with something either good 2nd hand or new? Advice? The brakes just needs adjustments and a clean. Wheels a trueing and bearings serviced. The bottom bracket is kaput and I will take it in to be replaced. The bars are quite tatty looking I might just respray them and replace the stem. The shifter’s are not nice and don’t work so great,  it would be nice to replace with proper trigger shifters but I am unsure how much that would cost or wether  it means replacing the derailleurs as well ..they actually look ok. The cassette seems to have a fair amount of rust not sure if that is a problem  or if it needs to be replaced ..it isn’t worn so unless the rust is a problem it will be great for a while. The frame is actually in great condition and just needs a good clean and polish. If anyone has advice or some parts that would be great. Some of the work I will do myself and some I will have to send it in to have done …if anyone has advice on that ….usually I use crown cycles..but I’m open to suggestions….bearing in mind that this is going to have to be done on a shoestring as things are a little tight at the moment…

Hi Mike

1. Kids often find gripshifts easier to operate than triggers. This is because of their smaller size hands. They can exert much more force through a gripshift as opposed to using just one weak little finger. Try cleaning and lubricating first. perhaps also clean and lube the cable inners and outers or replace them entirely. Replacing gummed up outer and inner cables often improves shifting hugely.

2. The rust on the fork looks serious, but you are going to struggle finding a replacement fork. I would polish it with tinfoil and get it as smooth as possible. Crumple up a ball of tinfoil and elbow grease the living daylights out of the rusty bits. A bit of careful brushing with a copper / brass brush will also help, but be gentle. As long as the fork still moves up and down, I would be happy with it. Kids are often so light that those forks basically function as ridged forks anyway.

3. Don't stress about the rust on the cassette, just clean & re-lube with a light oil.

4. If you want to make the handlebars and stem look good again, sand them lightly and re-spray with Hammerite Smooth. It gives a nice hardwearing surface straight out of a spray can.

Hi Mike/DJR

We replaced those same gripshifts to triggers on my sons bike last year. This particular model of gripshift is not good and often gets sticky resulting in a poor riding experience.

We replaced with Shimano 7 speed trigger shift.

For added results, add just a drop of vinegar to the foil and DJR's advice is a win on the rest.

I would add some Stans to the tubes for added puncture protection

Good luck on the cleanup!

Hi ed can you tell me more about the conversion to triggers ...did you have to replace the deraileurs cost etc etc I'm quite keen to do it. I tried some tinfoil on the stanchions ...it works so I have taken the forks off and am going to get moving with the whole project...thanks guys...
