Pain in the knee

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

I did about 500 km on my mtb during the last few months of last year with no issues. I have not changed the setup on my bike nor my shoes.

I started experiencing a sting pain on the front left side of my left knee, this happens even if I stretch before ride and start slow.

I know everyone would recommend a decent bike fit/setup, but my question is: I prefer riding with a short stem and wide bars. Will the fitment change my bar width and stem length? or only my seat height/position and the shoe angle?

Regards

L

Brilliant thanks guys!! Will start with the stretches Sat morning before the ride and if it does not help I'll do the adjustment to the seat and cleats

I certainly am no doctor and I might be totally wrong here, but first thing that comes to mind is "Runners Knee" (Google to check what causes the pain). I say this because I have experienced the same symptoms before.

I'm not even sure if cycling can cause runners knee, but my pain started whilst I was running and I had the same pain later on my bike.

Here's how I fixed it...INSTANT pain relief.

If you put your fingers behind your knee on the left side of your left leg (almost in the bend of your leg), there's a tendon (sening) at it's lowest point it connects to a bone, almost inline with your knee. I took a smallish rock (about the size of maybe a R5 coin) and placed it in the cavity between that tendon and your quad as close to that bone where the tendon connects to. Then I taped it using insulation tape....BOOM, pain gone! Apparently you need to move that tendon away from something that it rubs against, which is causing the pain.

......but like I said, I am no doctor and I might be completely wrong.

Hope you come right.

I had the same issue a while back.  Also, check your pedal stroke.  I had the tendency to pedal with my one knee (left) pointing outwards.  So try and keep your knees close to the top tube whilst pedaling.

Good luck.
