Surely one should dress for the fall, and not the ride?

It is all to do with risk and chance. What is the risk of falling off your bicycle and what is the chance it will happen? Doing downhill events is high risk and high chance so you wear appropriate attire. Road racing is low risk and low chance so you can wear spandex.

Makes sense, but these days normal road cycling (not racing) has become a dangerous arena.

I'm going to go for more of a enduro style clothing & lightweight padding...

It would definitely be a hassle on the  duathlons, in the change station, but then again, i am not breaking records any time soon...

If you an SA marathonesque rider you may not wear protective gear as it ruins the skin tight and aero roadie look most SA mountain bikers strive for.
