I'm buying a 650c 24mm wheelset for my road bike. Is it ok to use 650x23c tyres?

I know the brakes will be affected. something about brake drop? Is that where you adjust the brake pads up or down?

And is it easy to to make the brakes wider?

I have ultegra 6500 brakes.

Any other consdierations?

I have no idea how wide the rims are currently. Old bike from 2001 Rolf Vector Comp wheels.

doesn't sound right, is 24mm not the rim depth? (or profile)

Why?

sounds like you have a normal road bike with 700c wheels right? You cant fit 650c wheels as your brakes wont align with the rim side wall.

No its a wsd 43cm 650c bike. All the rage in the late 90's, early 00's.smaller wheels allow for proportional geometry that does not compromise handling. So the question is about the wheels being marked 24mm. Does that refer to the width and therefore affect the tyre size? I was under the impression that people were riding on wider rims these days? Am I mistaken?

And for the record, I rebuilt my mountain bike when I was in high school, on my own, my dad was too busy to help. Not bad for a girl. I didn't change the wheels however, so a little out of date and inexperienced as far as wheels go but not completely clueless and definitely able to understand the difference between 650c and 700c. But always willing to learn!

It sounds like and I think that 24mm is the rim profile. For me that is from the lip to where the nipple is located.

I am not sure by how much this will affect where your brake pads line up but there is some adjustment space on the caliper.

You should be able to move your pads to line up with the brake strip on the rim

Looking at the specs, the 24mm relates to the rim depth, so it is irrelevant in the choice of tyre width.

The internal width of the rims are 13.9mm and you will certainly be able to run 23mm tyres on them.

Good luck

To make your brake caliper width wider you can either adjust the barrel knob where the cable goes into the cliper or the more difficult option. This is at the back of the caliper where u can adjust the spring tension. I am not sure if all calipers have this.

The barrrel adjuster is your best bet.

Looking at the specs of the rims, this should not even be necessary as she will be running the wheels in a dedicated 650b frame, and they are normal road wheel width rims.

Thanks to eddy and Eddy G. Feel a little more comfortable. The guy from wiggle wasnt too helpful but he was the one that mentioned brake drop and that got me worried. Not too many options for 650c wheels. My next best options is zipp or hed and that is way above my ability. Is it normal that the product name mentioned 24mm?

Brake drop is only relevant if you were planning on running it in a stadard 700c frame.

Look at the specs on the Wiggle page you linked and you will see what part is 24mm. It is irrelevant.

Doh! Kept looking under product data and not description. Feel a little silly now.
