GSD's are not all they are cracked up to be.  HD makes their temperment very unpredictable in old age.  Although they are trainable, very few are trained and few owners are trained to use them properly.  REmember they are Shepards (hearders) with a personal companion element and not gaurd dog.  THey are therefore not as effective as other dogs, that have a far higher hearding -hunting/killing instinct, like the mastiffs, Boerbul, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Doberman, pitbul, bull terrier, staffy,  chow and puli
