due to my lack of ability to understand technical info .....

here is the qstn .. is a Manitou R7 80 Elite Absolute, better/worse or the same as a Fox F80 ??

Really depends on your point of view. The R7 is about 200g lighter, but is reputedly flexier.

Personally I prefer the Fox, but the weight saving is tempting ...

not to worried about the weight - its not going to take me from 700th place to first place that 200g.

So they are a much of a muchness?

Yup, there are seal on the fork which keep the oil in and they do get worn. The older Fox forks were prone to leaking a lot. My new (2007) ones don't.

Its not a big issue.

Manitou's got k@k local service and I've heard Fox is not much better.

well that helps alot ... they both got k@k service, so how to decide which one is better !

lurker, having never owned a mtn bike I am hoping that the collective experience of the hub will help here. One bike has the fox the other the manitou.

Trying to get the spreadsheet set up correctly to make the decision

Slowbee, since you're in the Cape you should perhaps look at a bike with a Rock Shox instead. They're serviced by Cape Cycle Systems who generally are quite good.

Having said that, I've recently purchased a Marzocchi (got awesome deal overseas) and I don't even know if there is still a service agent in the Cape!Embarrassed
