Already planning for next year's Epic.  Looking at custom wheelset with ZTR rims and DT 240's.  Any experiences with these rims in the Epic?  Can they handle the 9 days, or should one look at a slightly heavier rim?

ZTR rims are excellent XC rims but in my opinion too light for the rigors of the Epic. I would rather go for a heavier rim.

ALB-GOLD rode with them and I asked them about the rims and they said that they are as though as nails.

Luckily Alb-Gold didn't have to ride 20kms on the rim...

Haven't used them for the Epic, but have had mine for three years now and not a single problem. They have done Cederberg Experience which is pretty similar terrain.

I have 2 sets (one with Tune hubs and 1 with Chris King's).  I rode the tune's for the epic and they were bullet proof.  In fact I have had them for 2 years and they have not given a moment's trouble.

When I first got them I was 85kg, so there is no issue with heavier riders either.  I say go for it, just be careful who builds them.

I used them a few years back. The rims are pretty strong but the rounded bead lock dings very easily. After the Epic I had throw away the rear rim. I think there are stronger rims out there that are not much heavier. I also had trouble keeping these wheels true.

They do not get ,my vote if you weigh more than 75Kg and you want to use them for marathon racing. Get tougher rims. The ZTR 355 is a bit wider and therefore a bit stiffer and more resistant to buckling.GoLefty!!2008-04-10 23:45:50
