My steering feels "gritty"

But the headset is just the split washer and the top cover plate thing and two bearings. Why would it not fit?

The cups that house the bearings could potentially look different inside with different tapers or even widths.

Aish these Giants....My headset consists of a few plastic bits and 2 bearings. I'm pretty sure if I can get the bearings theres no need for anything else?

So so with an integrated headset you still push the CK cups into the frame? I see that most CK Headsets come with bearings in cups, but my mike you just put the bearing into the frame, and the frame has a little angle that the bearing sit on?

This is an exploded view of a headset and all its components...

with integrated, well the cups are integrated / molded into the frame so to speak. Still doesn't mean any bearing will fit. The little lip you mentioned is the taper and its specific.

Seems you need these dimensions / bearings

LOWER BEARING: TH Industries 1.5" ACB 36 x 45 073#
51.8mm x 8mm 36° X 45° 073# (1 1/2")

Can someone please tell me what the hell CK Cups are...is that like a Calvin Klein Bra or something?

I phoned my LBS. They have the bearing kit for R430. Seems like something that needs to be done once a year. So I'll just keep it in mind.

Thanks guys...I'll look into the Chris King option as well.

Once a year! NOT!

Decent bearings and decent care and proper pre load should see them lasting many years Cane Creek headset in my old 26er trail bike still good after 11yrs.

It was the mud and the WAP that killed your bearings.

If you must strip and clean cartridge bearings then remove all seals and flush with clean paraffin while spinning them until rotating smoothly. Then regrease and replace seals. If still 'gritty' then get new ones.

whahahha meneer jy is funny....cups pushes into the frame unless you have a integrated headset where the bearing just sits in headtube of the frame...the taper of the cup is thus molded into your frame.

Ahh we are on the same page then. Integrated Headset you only put the bearing in, and "seals" But CK does not have a "better" seal for the bottom bearing as that works with their bearing cups. Hence I said not much the OP can do except for putting in new bearings.

The top bearing hardly ever goes due to the water. It is the bottom one that gets all the water and mud.

The red circles will not be needed, as the Giant has an integraged Headset.

Does CK have something better than the thing I point out in the arrow? That is the race that the bottom bearing sit on, and I am yet to see / find a headset that has a nice "seal" there to keep grime out.

mmmmm no, hold on....my CK headset that I had on my niner(EMD with straight steerer) had a seal second to none at the bottom. Nothing against giant, but I doubt their bottom seal is that good
