Best Flats on a budget?

So I'm looking at getting some nice flat pedals for my Rockhopper HT, and have been looking at options.

I like the look of the Specialized Bennies, and the Crank Brothers 50/50's, but they may be a little expensive for my wallet right now? Is there anything comparable to these two for cheaper? Anyone used these above pedals and have any opinions on them?

Thanks in advance!

What is your budget?

I have no experience with the Spaz pedals, however the CB's are nice! But they don't last, prepare to replace the bearings about every 6 months.

Personally I would go for the Shimano Saint's http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/shimano-saint-pdm-x80-pedals which is R850.00

Also have a look at Dial'd bikes, http://dialdbikes.co.za/components/pedals/

I have heard some good things about the HT Nylon pedals, it seems to be a Nylon body with replaceable steel pins and sealed bearings. Also they are sub R600.00

Hey OMG

I have a set of CB 50/50 and have no problem with them, they could grip some more though. So I replaced them with a set of FUNN Fundamental flats for R450 on special, and they are awesome. Very low maintenance as well and durable.

Otherwise see if you can get Giant flats, they are cost effective and grip very well. Also check here, very good prices. Go for the DMR's.

R450 for Funn Fundamentals is super cheap! Where was that from? I got mine online for R950, which I thought was a very good price seeing as my LBS has them for R1250.

Thanks for the replies so far. Very helpful.

I guess my budget will be upto around R1k, but if either of my preferred options above turns up for slightly more, I may be able to stretch to it?

The Shimano Saints were another option I was considering, so at that price they may just get my interest?! Any more opinions on these pedals?

just asking why flats on a Rockhopper HT.  I ride flats myself (purely because riding with flats improves your skill), but a Rockhopper HT is a very very very forward geometry bike.

Unless you have crazy skills already, its going to be a tough ask to hop that bike with flats.  IMO, if you have flats and can't hop and manual, then it kinda defeats the purpose...

These are fairly tough. About R375 the last time I looked.

I had a pair of these.  The studs are really long and sharp and my shins carry the evidence.  They also ate through a pair of Five ten freeriders in a very short space of time...  I won't buy them again.  I had them for a few months and took the double knock to get a pair of saints.  The saints are a lot better IMO, however I think that the Giant pedals messed up my soles, so now the studs of the saints aren't making contact with the rubber as they should.

Hi Henry

I cannot remember for sure where I got them from.......I swear it was from Sportsworld on a clearance sale. I see they don't sell FUNN products anymore.

I was a great buy, they are very well made pedals.

I ride saints cause at the time was best value for money.

I have a set of giants for my wife that i used for a while, they work and grip really well. The drawback is that they are sharp! Abuse on shoes and shins are going to happen. They also have open bearings. There was upgraded pair that had sealed bearings I wasn't able to source them beginning of the year.

I would go for the DRM's on sportsworld site they well priced and have a good reputation with the minimal needs for flats covered. Otherwise I would go for the Saints again. If i had more cash and wanted a racy flat I would be looking at one of the thinner lighter pedals though.

Just Remember to regrease the saints and DRM every so often They have a reputation for being indestructible but I found the saints creak after a while. Everything was still in great shape inside Added some grease to casing and screwed in axle now working sweet again.

I had a set of these on my dirt jumping bike. , they are semi bomb proof, just heavy and heavy on your shoes soles, but good value for money... just invest in a decent set of shin guards if you plan to use these, propper meat denderizers...
