I am trying to figure out whether it will be worth the hassle of building a small home track for skills improvement. My background is road, just recently got a full suspension mtb, but my skill level is nothing short of pathetic. I clearly need practice, and lots of it, but like everyone, training time is an issue, especially when it involves driving somewhere.

I have an open area of 7000sqm available on my property. It is grassed, “L” shaped, mainly flat, couple of bumps here and there, and a river running down the one side. It can be lit for use at night, after work. I own the property, so can make whatever changes I like. I have ample labour available for shifting dirt.

Is something like this viable? Has anyone tried it, and if so, was the setup cost and labour worth it? I’m pretty sure that if not done properly, it could become boring after a short while.  Any and all opinions welcome.

Jumps.I would start building jumps in my yard if I had that space. Start with something really small that you're comfortable jumping, then build another one slightly bigger...and so on, its a lot fun and less work than building a pump track or mini trail until you know what you want to build.

Build a pump track - go and look at the one at Mikes bikes - needs maybe 120sqm.

And call up Peach and go on a skills course - will save a huge amount of time skipping some experimentation.

Come and visit me - I built a 500m L shaped track complete with berms/jumps/goodies.

I'll show you what 4 days with a Bobcat and 4 workers can produce :-)
