Road crank on a mtb?

Hi. I can't seem to find locally, a crankset with a 48t large ring. This is for my mtb (carbon frame and fork, 38c tyres) which I use as a commuter/cyclocross, so I need the higher gearing. Does anyone know where I could get one locally?? Better still, larger rings for my XT crankset ?

I've heard about fitting a road crank but is that a good idea? I know there will be some mods, but is there anyone out there that can help with the technicalities?

CRC has Deore/SLX cranks with 26,36,48t . Should I save a whole lot of grief and just get one of those?

Thanks

I used to have a 48T lying about for my old commuter.

I will have a look.  Will it fit the frame though?

I have a spare SLX crank which used to go with this chain ring.

Hi Sepia

Thanks will appreciate that. A 3x should stand out from the frame more so it shouldn't be a problem.

Will eagerly await your reply. Thanks

I tried it once. A road crank (external BB) on a mtb frame (26" hard tail)

Did not work.

Chain stays of a mtb frame comes out wider than a road frame causing the crank arms to hit the chain stays / could not even rotate once...

You might have problems fitting a road crank as the arms do not have as much off set and thus less clearance between the chain stay and crank arms.I have tried it with a Sram crank. The clearance was only about 2mm

I have the Deore 48,36, 26 crankset from CRC. Really nice crankset and well worth the money.Got mine about 3 months  ago . Price has gone up by about R300 since then.

The crank I have is SLX with Shimano rings size 48-36-26. As said, used it on my old touring bike and it does not fit my current bike as the  48t catches on the chainstay.

What is your current bike? Would you like to sell that to me if it works on my Silverback Storm?

Hi Brumby

How long did it take to arrive? And what bike is it on ? Don't understand why no one here seems to have one.

I used it on Trance and it was the biz.  Does not fit at all on a Superfly.  I really liked it very much so kept it for use on another bike.  I too don't understand why they are not used more often.  Great for commuting IMO. 9sp though.

I would be interested in buying if it's in good condition

Took 3 days to arrive from CRC. I've put it on a Giant Escape which has a 135mm rear axle width (same as a mountain bike) .

I'm familiar with that bike. What front dérailleur are you using?

Why not just take the 48T big ring?

Would love to, but I don't think the ring will fit my crank even though it's 104 BCD.

Same BCD apparently does mean compatibility. This is complicated.....
