Hey guys,

Anyone here managed to diy split your crown race ? I often change forks etc and its abit of a hassle always having to physically remove it and hit it back on. Its a sealed bearing Tapered system, so not too worried about dust or anything managing to get in.

If anyone has managed to split there crown race, please would you be so kind to inform me how you went about doing it ?

Cane Creek and Hope do not sell Split crown races seperately, so hence my question.

Would appreciate any advice !

Thanks

I split all my crown races with a tiny hacksaw. Works like a charm.

Thanks for the feedback, I actually tried it, but was so hard to get started and I just stuffed it up, the saw went all over the place. Did you put it in a vice and then cut it ? Maybe I'm just using the incorrect blade.

I've got a race on each fork. Is that not an option? Not sure if cutting a fixed race is a good idea.

Thanks for the advice, I think it will be a problem if you don't have a sealed bearing headset type. According to my research it works perfectly, I just do not know how to go about doing it.

I pop it in a vice then cut tangentially using my finger as a start guide.

The bearing face is angled so it'll stop the split ring from "spreading". Gusset have been doing it for years - its where I got the idea.

Haven't had a single issue yet.
