Giant P-XC2 rim split

Recommended Posts

After an easy Sunday ride nothing to technical got home cleaning the bike and realize the rear tyre went flat pumped it and went flat again. i then removed the tyre and found a split on the circumference of the inner wall starting from the valve hole outwards in both direction. (image attached) has anyone had a similar failure or ever seen such a split. (Bio: i'm well under 100kg, ride medium pace and power minimal jumping)

Unless you've pumped it up over 4 bar I'd say it's a defective rim.

If it's still in warranty speak to your LBS. If not then see it as an opportunity for an upgrade.

Exact same think happened to me with the same model of rim.

I ended up with splits in 4 places on my rear rim, the longest being 12 inches.  I ride a Giant XTC Advanced and I only use it to commute along a bike path.  No off road, and no jumps.  i'm 90kg, I keep the tires 5-10psi below the max recommended pressure.  I have ridden off the a curb the odd time, but I do that with most of my bikes.

The rim looks like it tore like a perforated piece of paper.

Be more specific on the tire pressure. How much exactly.

If you look at a nice fat mtb tire pumped to 4 bar, compare it to a skinny road tire pumped to 4 bar with the Laplace equation.

In short, the wall tension in a bigger sphere is much higher than in that of a smaller sphere at equal pressures.

I have the 27.5 Schwalbe Racing Ralphs.

The Max pressure written on the tire is 55psi, and I run between 45 and 50 psi
