Cracked chainstay - New build on its way...

Last ride I did with this bike was Transbaviaans a good 3 months back. Injured my knee during the race so have been off the bike since then bar a couple of short testers on another bike.

 

I took it apart to give it a good clean and this is what I found...Must have happened during the race as it was fine before although it must have been in the works for a while. I originally bought this frame (Silverback Vida 1) about 3 years ago 2nd hand for a SS build but turned it into my 'race' bike since...so a bit bummed. Doubt I will be able to warranty it as I am pretty sure that has expired.

 

It is insured so will contact them tomorrow and see what gives...So I guess a new build will be in order soon

There seems to be a problem with these frames, did a couple of searches and came across similar cases.

Yes maybe since there are a lot of these they will 'comp' me a 2013 Vida frame if they have any lying around. Think the Vida range ended in 2013 and they moved onto the Sola.They will all clash with my red colour scheme though

On a serious note.If you cant warantee claim it, take it to Weidemans Engineering in Zastron street. They will fix it for you. It wont break again, believe me. It will cost you about R100. They are very experienced in repairing bicycle frames.

Thanks for the advice, will give it a shot. Will be much cheaper and less hassle than an insurance claim if I need to go that route. Will visit Hannes tomorrow and see what they say regarding the warranty

Is your frame the 2012 or 2013 frame? I have a 2013 Vida 1 with no issues. At the time of buying the bike I was told that the cracking had been resolved and was limited to pre 2013 frames.

 

Must admit though, even after having the bike for two years, I sometimes look at the frame and wonder .....

Yip, saw it a bit earlier when I did some searches on the subject.

 

I think it is a 2012 (it is the 'silver' magnesium alloy one) which seems to be prone to cracking at the chainstay.
