I currently own a garmin vivoactive with the HR strap,

One day while riding my trasmitter came loose(no idea how that happened )and lost it.

Currently l cant find a transmitter without buying the chest strap as well(which instill have) phoned around and it costs aboit 1200..

Now the question ,with discovery vitality i can get the apple watch for about the same price or even less i think..

What would you guys suggest, buy the HR bundle or get the apple watch

I know i will need to ride with my cell.(which i do any way.)

Ps. I do mtb and not road cycling so not really interested in any other sensors except GPS and HR

Anyone have experience with apple watch..

I have an Apple Watch and started riding with it last week. I have used the standard app on the watch for riding and clocking data. Works beautifully. The Apple Watch is "total solution" to what I need. Polar, Runkeeper, Strava and other apps work with the watch too.

I bought a Catalyst waterproof case for my watch (I have the 42mm, they only make a 42mm case for now) and I have no worries of scratches, water damage etc.

I have had Polar watches (2 of) and an Ambit 2 in the past. Never again.

Battery life on the Apple Watch is also much better than what the forums make it out to be.

I take it you have an iPhone 5 or newer... Only works with iPhones.

Hey,,thx for the reply..

Yes i have a iphone..

Do you have the Sport version?

Why did you switch to the apple watch if you had a polar and sunto abit?

I have the Stainless steel 42mm. Difference is the glass. SS has the sapphire crystal, bit more robust. Stainless scratches very easily though. Aluminium sport version is more scratch resistant.

If I had to do it all over again I will buy the sport 42mm space great with black sport band. Much cheaper and does the same thing. The 42mm is just a bit bigger and looked better on my wrist. You can upgrade to the 42mm sport version through Vitality for R900.

Polar, suunto etc etc all worked with a heart rate chest strap. Pain in the behind when you realise you have forgotten to put on your chest strap.... when ou have already kitted up.

The Apple Watch is constantly on my wrist. I earn minimum of 50 points per day for just walking around. I don't have the hassle of having to put on another watch for riding and then charging the thing separately, just a big hassle. I simply put my phone and watch on charge at the same time and both finished charging together and off again.

My whole eco system is Apple so it just make more sense to me to ditch the others and go apple watch.

Go to the iStore in Canal Walk and try it on and get a feel for it.

Hey,,so i went to get me the 42mm black version..

So far i do like it..

Only have 1 concern..THE HR monitor.

Went for a shirt ride yesterday and picked up my HR at 120-130 max???

Normally on my chest strap my HR IS AT 150 plus on a ride(yes i am unfit)

Went for a second ride and pushed the watch higher on my arm to get a better fit and it worked..

hr was alot better or closer to what i know it should be .

Do you have any other tips?

Do you just use your normal health app or workout app on apple watch or do u use strava aswell

Very Cool,

Congrats!!

I did not have any issues/concerns re HR monitor or readings, very accurate if I compare to polar past use.

Make sure its set up properly for the wrist you wear it on. ie. left wrist with crown on left, left wrist with crown on right.... Right wrist etc etc. Find it in settings on watch itself.

Invest in one of these:

https://www.digicape.co.za/watch-accessories/catalystcase-applewatch-42mm-black?has_options=1

Chrome Imports in the new Parklands Mall sells glass scrensavers for the 42mm. With the screensaver and the Catalyst case you will have a waterproof shockproof pretty indestructible setup.

Speak to Bradley if you go to Digicape. Buy all my apple goods from them.

We rode Contermans this morning and I used the standard Apple Outdoor Cycle workout app. I may link/setup starve only for the elevation function in future. But for now I am happy with the standard watch workout app.

Enjoy using you watch. Its just so much more than a watch, I use it to play music from  my phone and as my apple tv remote etc etc. I als take some calls on it, I travel a lot and don't have to worry checking my phone for whatsapps, texts and mails, just scan through it on my watch and reply if urgent from there.

Have a good one.

Hey thx for the reply.

Do you know if we can use standalone apple workout app if we can export to strava?

My strava account is linked to discovery so can get my points via strava..

Not sure how one would export, but just load strava onto the watch through the apple watch app on your phone, no need to export.

Hey. Thx again..will do it late and go for a ride ..

I just set up my starve and it works 100% heart rate etc.

A bit fiddly setting up in the sense of linking heart rate monitor in the app to your watch  via bluetooth.

Pretty sweet having starve on watch...!!

Can you ONLY get the iWatch via Vitality if you have a Discovery Card?

I am aware of the discount per week, etc...would like to get the watch as I train enough to get the discount...is there any other way?
