Oh - to answer your question on the Camber vs Fuel - those rims on the Camber are beautiful. Yes, the camber has a slightly lower spec (drive-train wise) but then you've also got to consider the effect of the higher specced wheelset when compared to the Trek's.

It's a hard choice, tbh. When considering spec differences I'd favour the wheels and fork over drivetrain, simply due to the cost differential involved with changing drivetrain bits when compared to wheels. But - GX is a wonderful groupset. I'm using it on my Giant, and it's every bit as crisp (in fact more crisp) and more solid feeling than the XT that came off it. If that helps...

Thanks Myles, your advice helps a ton, really. I have also been leaning towards the Spez for all the reasons you mentioned. I also feel it''s better to go for the better wheels and shock rather than the group set. Thanks for the feedback on your GX groupset.

Off to Spez then for me...

Just remember to get them to change the stem out for something more appropriate, and get the right size bike!

I shall do so. I was a bit stumped at the Trek guy's assessment that I should be on a Large, as the Spez LBS clearly pegged me on XL, and he just measured by height.

Shorter stem is definitely on the priority list.

The standard stem on the Camber XL and XXL is 90mm, on the L it's 75mm.

For a bike with a 750mm bar (standard issue) and the Camber's intended purpose, this is perfect. I've ridden Cambers in many guises, they're spot on with their standard bar/stem combo. Not everyone needs a bar the width of a Ford F250.

For comparison, I ride a 750mm bar with 60mm stem on my Enduro.

I wont go for the Camber if there are any requirements that only Spez should service the shocks. This is particularly the case with Brain shocks. I would go for the Fuel Ex before any Spez but the bike I think is the best value as an 'inbetween xc trail bike' is the Merida One-Twenty which has the same type of floating rear shock as the Fuel Ex. I exclude the Trance from this because I see this more as a pure trail bike. My choice would be the Fuel Ex or Merida One-Twenty and here the Merida will win because of better specced for the price.

Agreed on width - above 720mm (imo) it becomes far more about personal choice and dynamics, and how quick you want the steering input to be. But IMO - anything above a 70/80mm stem on an MTB is criminal...

hmmm, 75mm seems more reasonable. I thought I took the measurements from here in my earlier post... yet, this clearly agrees with your 75mm, perhaps my eyes are the root of all my problems???
