The level of riding - and even walking - at the back of the Elite group up Ou wa pad was really crap last year. Did not make sense to me that those people even got into the first start group.

Yeah, I am not sure how the "elite" group works. In 2013 my time was 3:40'ish. That was NOT good enough to get me in that group. So in 2015 I started in group "A" again.

 

Suspect I am still not going to be in the first group this year although I remember the organisers saying somewhere that SAS seeding will be used for this event...which might help.

At the back of A, yes. That is what I encountered last year. I found that doing about 4h30 or less will get you into A.
