Good day...

I've made a list, well at the moment it's a very short list, of some mountain passes i would like to ride this year and beyond...

And on my list is "The Mother of All Mountain Passes".... Sani Pass

Any advice will be appreciated

Cheers

This can make your list very long . . ..

It also includes a video of every pass.

I have ridden (well, ridden and walked the odd place) twice and am planning a third ride in a couple of weeks, but I am stopping training now so hopefully i will not be fit enough and have an excuse not to go.

Start in Underberg if you want a good warm-up or better at Sani Pass Hotel. Good option is to spend the night at Sani Top or another cheaper backpackers lodge just inland, Sani Stone Lodge, which is about five kms further.

About 5-10km further is another steep climb, Black Mountain, with a fantastic dirt road descent over the other side. Long steep climb and then about 15km of sweeping, fast descending -- great fun.

Sani is a great challenge and a very good workout, but what we have done in the past is go further into Lesotho and made a great weekend of riding. An option would be to do Sani Pass on a Friday, then on Saturday Black Mountain to Molumong Lodge (about 40-50km depending on route and how much offroad and how much district-type road you want to do), and back over Black Mountain and down Sani pass on Sunday. Last day is long but lots of descending so a great workout at altitude but not impossible.

Here is a Sani Pass comparison to some Cape Town climbs, an Epic day from the early years and some Tour de France climbs.

The Sani Backpackers is a great cheaper option to stay at and a nice ride to the border post . Sani Pass hotel will be way more expensive . Sani Top is very expensive and offers very little for the price other than great views . I would recommend a ride from the backpackers to the top , have tea/lunch and then ride a little further or back down again .  There are some nice options around Underberg if you want more riding than that . You could also ride the back road to Nottingham road about 95 km from Himeville and 105 from the backpackers . A nice quiet road with amazing scenery and a few climbs to keep you honest . Instead of Notts ,you could also ride to Glengarry in Kamberg ( about 10 kms closer ) . They offer chalets as well as camping ,and some really cool single track on neighbouring farms

If you raise the red sani section to the same spot the ventoux starts at they are almost the same height not counting the fact that sani is rough gravel road.

Do the Sani dragon, awesome race and well organized. There's also the medics available.

Find the biggest climbs you can and go train.... A LOT A LOT!

On the way up take food a lot of will power and make yourself light as possible. It's a beeeeg climb that gets bigger at the top.

On the way Down, make sure your brake pads are 100s and hold tight, it's def worth the climb.

When I took my parents up in a 4x4 a few years back I had forgotten my passport but managed to cross it there AND back. I was worried I wouldn't manage to get back into RSA but again they didn't check properly. It would have been a long walk along the escarpment to Rhino Peak and down to the Drak Gardens Hotel via the Mashai pass.

There is a much quicker walkout - along the 12 Apostles to Pinong Pass, down Pinong then cut cross country to the parking below the SA border post.

The road is tarred to the old trading post ruins about 2km past the Sani Pass Hotel. Either the Hotel or the Backpackers is a good starting point.

You'll want a 2x or 3x system with 24 front ring (22t recommended for a 29er) and at least a 36 at the back.
