1x11 chain length

An easy way to check the chain length is to fit the chain. Insert the quick link but don't lock it in place.

In the 32 x42 gear ratio or whatever the largest cog is, the derailleur cage pulley wheels should be as close to perpendicular to the ground with the bike level to the ground. Shorten the chain till the pulley wheels centre line is in this position.

Then check that the 32x10 or 11 gear is workable without the chain rubbing on itself as it loops over the top pulley and exits from the bottom pulley wheel (I assume you will be back pedaling when checking).
