learn a bit about depression before making sweeping statements like that

Hi Stretch.....I don't support Monrak's view but I have a bit of an inclination as to where he might be coming from...we all have kids and we know what impact it will have on their lives...imagine them being much older and they are  known as Mirra's kids...the guy who took his own life...so I think the comment was more of an emotional comment....I still stick to my prior post and I have immense sympathy for Dave as well as his family....this is really sad.....

yeah.....dont want to derail the thread...but people need to learn the reality of depression/mental disorder and suicide. Learn a bit about the disease..the statistics are frightening and sadly in this country (and most) not enough is done to raise awareness. A diagnosis with a mental disorder that is not treated effectively (for numerous reasons) is in many cases a death sentence...and that is the real scary thing. there is NOTHING selfish about suicide as a result of depression

I lost my father and step father to suicide. Its not fun. It has taken me years to understand the mindset that you must be in to take your own life, and I still dont really get it. Dave Mirra has been a hero of mine for a long time, especially when he left Haro and started his own company , Mirraco. Inspiring.

I only followed him vaguely during his BMX days, but more closely over the last 2-3 years in his more recent move to triathlon and ironman racing as a very good age group athlete, and his attempts to qualify for Kona world championships.

Over the past two years he raced a number of Ironmans trying to earn a slot to Hawaii.  Obviously, given his celebrity he was offered numerous opportunities and entries from sponsors to race Kona if he wanted, but he turned them all down as he was determined to qualify for Kona the hard and "right" way,  because he appreciated it was a world championship (unlike other celebrities like Gordon Ramsey and former NFL stars, who just went along for the Kona ride while DM turned down the offers).

That earned my utmost respect, so bleak he never made it to Kona and fulfilled his dream...
