On March 13th-20th this year, 4 of us will embark on tackling the worlds toughest Mountain Bike Stage race. We will cover over 647KM’s of Africa’s toughest terrain and climb a vertical ascent of 15,000m’s which is almost twice that of Everest in 8 days. One of us will be my father who will be riding with my brother in a team and he is 69 years old. He is proving that age is just a number and speaking of numbers, we will be riding to raise funds for the elderly people of Zimbabwe. As you know, Zimbabwe’s currency is worth ZERO and thousands people invested all their retirement money in the now worthless Zimbabwe Dollar. The Zimbabwe Aid Fund (ZAF) was established for the purpose of raising funds to support the pensioners in Zimbabwe. The plight of the elderly is one of the less publicised outcomes of Zimbabwe's social, economic and political collapse. There are many institutions for the aged spread throughout Zimbabwe, most of them are dependent on various levels of external funding to survive. In addition to the retirement homes, there are many elderly Zimbabweans still living in their own homes that are also dependent on donated food parcels for their survival. The money raised by Zimbabwe Aid Fund (ZAF) is primarily used to fund the purchase of food. The Committee will look to contribute funds to all worthwhile priority projects including equipment and medicines. The Fund does not support individual requests. The Zimbabwe Aid Fund (ZAF) liaises closely with other aid and assistance organisations such as S.O.A.P. (Harare & Bulawayo), Homes in Zimbabwe (HIZ - UK) and the Zimbabwe Pensioners Support Fund (ZPSF – South Africa) and funds are deployed on a needs basis. The role performed by the ZAF and the other organisations is now critical to the survival of the elderly. Entry was sponsored by Veeam, whom are also donating to the cause. Thanks for your input though. There are a lot of people riding Epic doing it for charity and raising awareness.
