Hub bearings

Dieter ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

My rear hub felt a bit gritty so I stripped it and cleaned it from pawls to balls. The culprit is a bearing in the freehub body but it turns out that it's a proprietary size (thanks Fulcrum). The bearings are around R200 each and I was quoted R450 for reconditioning the rear hub. I have 26'' wheels and this is almost 1/4 of the price I paid for both! The bearing is not salvageable.

What is the worst case scenario if I leave the bearing as is?

Should I just replace the outer bearing and be done with it?

Are RushSports the only guys who bring in bicycle specific size bearings?

Thank you!

the bearings are replaceable and do this asap.

check for the numbers on the bearings - its a code eg 61802 or 61803  or google for the actual size.  then go shop at an industrial/ engineering supplies centre.

here in cape town  almost all bike shops do this and charge you and arm and a maybe both legs for the job

( i just did my Zipp Freebody bearings for R280 and have done my campagnolo bearings as well )

good luck

Did you measure the actual size of the bearing e.g. 22x14x7 this would be 22 mm OD, 14 mm ID and 7 mm width. Phone a few bearing shops and see if they have.

You'll soon find out if this is a custom size.

Honestly if the hub was bothering me and the bike shop quoted me R450 to make the problem go away, I'd probably just pay it.

As said you need to get the code number off the bearing or remove it and measure the three dimensions.  You can get most from an industrial bearing supplier.  I keep a range in stock but am north of JHB.  Prices vary with origin and quality.  ABEC 3 have a number with 4 digits eg 6902 while ABEC 5 will have a 1 after the first digit eg 61902.  Not all manufacturers use the same codes.  European and Japanese are more expensive than Chinese but you have to trust your supplier in most cases.

Replace the bearing as if it binds on the axle you are in for a bigger bill.

Have a similar issue with my back hub. bearings are shot and making a rather hectic grinding noise. Being that I have no mechanical aptitude whatsoever, I took it to the LBS who advised me to just ride it until it stuffed out completely and then buy a new wheelset.

Is there anybody in the Durban area who could redo the bearings on the back wheel? R450 to redo bearings sounds a helluva lot better than over R1k for a new wheelset.

Was thinking more along the lines of someone I can drop the wheel off at and then come back a few days later to collect it fully repaired. My LBS unfortunately does not offer that as one of their services.

Change your LBS if they would rather sell you a new wheel than earn their money by changing some cheap bearings. It takes less than 30 min for someone who knows what they are doing and if they have the proper tools.

Contact rush sports once you know the size.

The original is made by S&S with the code 7149788. I have measured it and it appears to be a 19285.

Rushsports unfortunately don't sell to the public but my new LBS have brought them in. I will just strip in all myself and give them the freehub body so it's less labour for them. They can just put it in as I don't have a small bearing puller yet

Thanks for the input everyone!

all the bike shops in Durban can replace bearings...

is the hub not damaged ? could be why they suggest you ride it till it breaks...to replace the hub and re spoke a cheap wheel set is not worth it.
