11-32 cassette - road

Anyone running an 11 speed 11 - 32 cassette?

How have you found it? In terms of the jumps between cogs?

It's a long story but I need to run a 52/53 tooth chain ring on the big blade but I still need the light gears. So was thinking as a compromise I'd run a pro/semi compact (36/52) and change my 11-28 to an 11-32. Currently on 34/50 with 11-28.

My only concern is the jumps get pretty big mid cassette.

Anyone got some experience? thoughts? Advise?

Much appreciated.

Would your RD take a 32?

I also ride 50/34 and 11/28 and considered using a bigger cassette, but my RD is only rated for 28T max. So I decided to try and upgrade the engine instead! So far, it's working!!

Yip, the RD may be an issue. The 6800 Ultegra RD can handle 32, but judging from my 28, it won't be with much room to spare.

I run a compact crank with 11-28. This works well enough, but there has been occasion where I've run out of topend. The way I see it though, is that I hardly spend significant time in the big ring and 11, so not that big a deal.

One of ourr strongest savages rides a 11-32 on a standard crank, had to get a long cage rear mech. He got it for everest and never took it off, helped on du toits and franshoek at the TOGH.

I will need to change the rear mech - not an issue.

So he doesn't fnd the jumps too big? Just enjoys having the extra low range?

On a compact 50/34 and 11-28, granny gear comes in at a ratio of (34/28) = 1.214.

A 36 small blade and 11-12.....28-32 cassette gives you a granny of (36/32) = 1.125, which is obviously smaller than the compact of above. But your next biggest gear is (36/28) = 1.286, so your proposed set-up will only give one smaller gear, which will be granny, than the compact above. Is it worth it?

But sounds like you're more bothered above increments within the range, so I'm..... :offtopic:

This falls into the long story part of my post... basically it's the 52 I'm after but I like my granny gear. More on the long story is that I'm happy with my compact 11-28 setup... *sigh*

Anyway, I'm worried about that big jump you allude to... but if I get used to the 36-28 and only need the 32 in emergencies... hmmm then just stick to the 11-28... but already sometimes I wish I had an extra gear when I'm in the 34-28.

He enjoys just slipping into the 32 when the pace eases off on the climbs sometimes to give the legs a rest. He uses it well and was in our top 4 at TOGH every day and has a mean sub 5 min sugar bushy time so there is no lack of power there :P

Different folks for different strokes, works very well for him

That's good to hear. I like to hear about the strong guys embracing the lower gears!

Isn't the search for a smaller granny, 'just in case', never ending?! I thought everyone 'saved' granny for emergencies and when the emergency arrived, they were in granny already! Or is that just me and my puny legs?

I've found lately that if I force myself (I have to say out loud "you need to train this!") to ride hills in bigger gears than granny, and suffer a lower cadence than I prefer (see comment above about puny legs), that in time when I do go back to granny that the cadence is higher than it was before, as well as my road speed! But then again, I'm not a 'racer' so improvements to the engine are easy to find....!

Yeah, I think you are absolutely right.

We're a bit off topic now... although maybe the answer is don't worry about the jumps in the gears. and I get that there are other things to consider and I know all the arguments to those, I've been using them unsuccessfully.

Hmmm decisions, decisions...

Oh and what I've learnt recently, is that it's seriously relative. Your 'puny' legs are someone else's powerhouses!

If you are interested Elf I have a SRAM Force WiFli  rear mech and 1070 11-32 cassette that I don't use and going for a song.  10-speed though.  Perfect nick, almost new used for one trip to the Alps.

Im running an 11-32 on a stock short cage Sram Force 22 derailleur. Im running a standard 39/53 crank hence the 11-32 cassette.

The only thing I cannot do is ride in the 32 and 28 while being on the 53 in the front. To do this youll need the Wi-Fli rear mech. it doesnt just have a longer cage but the Body is longer too, moving the cage further away from the cassette.

On the 11 speed i find the jumps between the gears really comfy. The other option is a semi-compact crank 36/52 and a 11-28 cassette

I didnt need the 32 on Sunday past as my cadence was still nice and high for chappies and suiker. I do however use it up really steep stuff, Steenbras dam, Franschhoek pass etc.

OJA and dont use it while training! Its just going to make you lazy!!!!

Thanks for the feedback...

Do you have to remember not to change to 28 and 32 while on the big blade or does it not want to go, and serves as a reminder?

Or if you forget, does it end badly? chain getting jammed or some other calamity.

If I was going this route I was just going to change the rear mech but maybe if I don't have to...
