Heavyweight (literally) advice

Hi All,

I'm a big boy rider (120kg) and have been cycling for about a year on my Silverback Sola 3 before it got stolen.

I upgraded to the Sola 2 - but the seat is killing me. Not a guru, but I do believe the seat is narrower than it's predecessor...

So I need to buy a new one but with so many options available and spending R1000 on it, I was wondering if there is any advice?

At CWC they recommended I try a

Griffin Hollow Saddle http://www.pro-bikegear.com/en-gb/catalogue/components/88/selins/prsa0175_main/griffon-hollow-saddle

The 142mm but there are two - one thats solid, and one that's got a vent in the middle?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

(And big apologies if this is in the wrong forum section )

I am a bit heavier than you, used to ride on a tundra without issues and then one day my saddle just started killing me. I ended up going for a 155mm Spez Henge. Spez helderberg gave me a loan saddle for a weekend and i put it through its paces. We rode groenlandberg in Grabouw and I actually broke the test saddle, but it was a few years old so they were cool.

They come with a warranty (actually not sure how long) but sales guy told me even if it breaks long after i bought it i bring it in and they give me new one.

Give them a try, they also have that assometer thingie, but the salesmen gave me one look and said it wasn't necessary.

The seat is killing you? ...on your sit bones or between your legs from the rubbing? ...is your saddle level? ... do you find you need to push back on the seat while riding?

...how old are your shorts and do you use cream on the chamois?

if your saddle is tooo narrow or too far back or too high you will feel the rubbing between your legs...

I just speak form experience...i am no expert...i am also a heavy rider...i feel your pain.

I have a prologo on the merida no centre relief and a specialized romin evo comp with a cut out on the trek (road bikes)

i battled with the prologo in the beginning but since tilting the seat ever so slightly down in the front...it seems more bearable...

I believe the the cut out in the middle does offer some form of relief but more for long distances...on a mtb you should be standing and moving around more so the blood should get to flow better.

my mtb bike has a standard giant seat...dont spend enough time on it to waste money upgraded the seat...i just suffer and stand or move around as much as i can.

I'm 114kg and I my saddle is a Selle SMP Hell Saddle. I find it comfortable but as they say every arse to his own. I've also used a WTB Rocket with great results.

Measure your sitbone width. Mine is very wide- 155, so most seats ended up hurting me. Got myself a Selle SMP Extreme. Problem solved.
