I'm pretty new to Mountain Biking but my Shimano 2x11 (26/36 front, 11/42 rear) gives me plenty of options on either ring with a high overall spread and relatively close ratios too. I quite like it.

That's like saying the Iditarod is uneccesary.... :) each to their own I say - take Carbonboy.... he spent the weekend riding up and down the same hill for fun.....

Was he the one who went up and down that hill in Plett this weekend?

The only I can say is running 2 x or 3 x in Cape Town, especially in winter is this:

1 x 10/11/12 will last longer/hive more mileage because there is only 1 front chain ring. Why, because no matter who you are or what you are riding you WILL use one chain ring more than the other and with mad rain etc. it wears more than the other so when you change rings (typically the big blade gets used more) you tend to get chainsuck.

How to deal with that? Rotate/change chains early, wait for the chainsuck and replace dirvetrain.

The new Shimano will suffer the same consequences, maybe more seeing as most will run it with just one lever. I.e. it will spend most of it's time in the big ring.

1 x 10/11/12 does not have this problem so you can really ride the groupset into the ground without too much consequence. Yes keeping the chain in spec will extend the life even further.

Re the gear spacing on the new DI 2 x 11, the spacing is pretty much as per Sram if you run one lever.  The way I understand the programming it will run big blade to top of range then change to small blade and downshift 2 or 3 and run the same visa versa.
