Hate to  break it to you (edit: sorry, not to you Sven but to the other naysayers who are shouting at us) but I worked as a journalist for 8 years...its called a "news cycle". People will be tired of discussing this. The time to discuss safety is NOW. Sympathies to his family, it is them who are now suffering thanks to his error of judgement. I do not have sympathy for cyclists who cycle on the national roads!

Like Tubehunter said -his family will probably read this thread so have a heart and please be sensitive?

I don't understand the need of elements in our fraternity to immediately blame the cyclist in situations like this. I hate how we as cyclists ourselves perpetuate the idea that we are lesser road users with lesser rights.

He did not break any rules and had full right to cycle there (others have already pointed out the difference between a highway and a national road for you)

I cant see how it was a error of judgement, he did nothing wrong by using that road, there is a speed limit of 80km/h with lots of cameras and there is a huge yellow line.

He most likely wanted to do the 4 passes route which is very popular among cyclist. And when doing that route you are only on the N2 for I guess around 10 to 15km?

A separate thread will have the same heading .....  Cyclist killed on Sir Lowrys Pass...

Nope a separate thread with: "Is it safe\legal to cycle on Sir Lowry's Pass.."

That way the cyclist in question does not have his family trying to understand the moronic ideas of keyboard warriors on this site trying to make judgements on the validity of his riding on that road for whatever reason's they would like to conjure up while the family are still making peace that he is no longer coming home and living with them!

I do believe you could show a bit of respect. No one is shouting at you and you have the wrong end of the stick.

Discuss it NOW, but NOT HERE!

To make it relevant, imagine something happened to you or someone close to you and your family came to this site through some link of sorts and read the drivel that comes from hypothesizing the merits of what and why the accident happened from the vastly differing views that makes us the community we are, ON A THREAD attempting to show respect for losing one of our fellow cycling fraternity.

Just know that unless you have some first hand witness account that could bring light to some of the unanswered questions the family will have, it's all just noise that detracts from them finding any semblance of peace and comfort in our collectively shared remorse that it has happened!
