RIP Trans Karoo

AFAIK Pieter van Wyk who also do the Gravel Travel and Cederberg 100 Miler (and is/was involved with the Epic?) was Route Director, not sure what his relation is with Orange Anvil

Pieter is the route director of Trans Karoo, Cederberg 100 Miler and Gravel Travel. He teamed up with Glyn Broomberg and that is how Trans Karoo started. When Glyn joined the Epic team he had to sever all ties with all other events, including TK. So that is where things took a knock. Then there was the sponsors who wanted to see a big event with lots of media coverage and TK is not exactly that.

I am hoping that someone with an interest in cycling, like PPA, will reach out and keep this event going. Personally I don't mind an increase in the entry fee as long as they can keep this going. PPA has a lot of money at their disposal to commit towards cycling so let's see what happens.

This past week I saw they moved the Cederberg 100 miler to the weekend on which TransKaroo used to take place. I though that was the final piece to conclude that TK is no more.

But then I got this email....

And on their website...

I found that Trans Karoo was too close to the 36One. I did both in separate years. For my ability it was just too much, too close to each other. One of them is serious effort for the average Joe.

Could that not have played a part in the turnout at TK?

And if so it might help a lot if they spread the dates out a bit further from each other. Training for the one could lead to participation in the other if it more or less fits into the stucture of the average training program - TK four/three weeks before/after 360One and I would do both...

Edit: Just had a look at Rouxenator's PPA link posted above - they listed the date as more than a month after the 36One! Might just pull suckers like me back in!

they need to have a serious rethink how to "host" riders the night before the start; was a pretty uninspiring affair as was the morning of the race start.

cant honestly say I am super excited having instant coffee for breakfast in a bar with the orange/ blanje/ blou still having pride of place against the wall.....

Somehow missed this mail & post - would be awesome!

As much as I loved the race, the organisers probably need to find a tweak so that the race appeals to a larger audience. On the flipside, maybe it was more an issue with sponsors than riders, I have seen with the event I am involved in, without good sponsors you are dead on the ground.

Somehow I only trust cycle event organiser to... well... organise a cycle event. I am very picky about where I stay so I always book my own accommodation.

When I wrote to PPA I asked them to give this a try, maybe it could attract a larger crowd if they are behind it and it will also be a first for them as they have never has an endurance event like this in their event portfolio. They do have the funds to back it.

On Monday I entered the DVX after checking the PPA listing for this event (27 May) and the TransKaroo website. It was clear that it will not happen on that day as they have not done anything on either pages since November.

Seems that yesterday or today some changes were made to the PPA listing of this event as well as the the TransKaroo website.

Over on the TransKaroo website the landing page has a new header indicating to early in September, however the header falls back to the old May date on all other paged. Also the wording of the T&Cs has one change indicating it was recently : "Deferment of the entry to 2018 may be granted at the discretion of the race organisers,"

On the PPA side we get a bit more info including a date which is the 2nd of Septemeber.

PPA : http://www.pedalpower.org.za/events/pedal-power-association-150/

As we have seen the last time it is not a given that it will happen, but there is still hope.
