Wide Range 9-Speed Cassette

I was pondering the idea converting a 3x9 MTB to a 1x9, with a nice wide range cassette. Of course, "wide range" is not exactly synonymous with 9-speed - talking about 11-40 or 42 here.

Making up a cassette like that means you'll have to hack 'n' tack together cogs and add an expander and possibly a spacer, and, and, and... It has been done and it works well, so no arguments about that.

My point is: why do the industry force us to upgrade to the expensive 11-speed parts when we just want a simple wide range cassette in 9-speed. You're only missing a couple of cogs, so I don't think the gaps will be that bad. Something like 11-13-16-19-21-24-32-36-42 would work?

Maybe I've answered my own question. Maybe a gap for someone in the market. Maybe I'm the only one...

Good idea . I just dont think any 9 speed rear derailleurs would handle that range though ? B-screw would need to be turned in quite far to get the top pulley wheel far enough from the 42t cog

I tried based on the link provided with an X0 9speed and a 42 but cannot get it to work despite the longer b screw provided threaded in from the opposite side

Maybe if there was a goatlink type hanger extender for sram it would work as suggested above.

Will also be following with interest

At the moment have 11 - 13 - 15 - 18 - 21 - 24 - 28 - 32 - 36

Ok, here's another question: Why does an 11-speed derailleur work with large sprockets, like 42T and a 9-speed supposedly not? I've never seen the 2 side by side, so I don't know.

I was under the impression that it's mainly the shift ratio that's different. Comparing like for like, of course.

Built completely different as well as the top pulley wheel is "off-centre" (on the newer 11 speed systems) to allow the wheel to move further "away" from the cassette as the chain gets "shorter" . Not quite sure how to explain this properly
