Single N/W Chainring

Hey guys

So I have a giant trance with a 30 tooth and a 42 I think double rings. I want to change to a 1x as I can pretty much ride anywhere on my 30t. Only reason I would need more gears is perhaps going down fire roads or on road.

Question: should I get a raceface N/W 32 and have 11:36 cassette. Or should I get a one up 42 for the 11:36 and go for a 34t?

I have look at the gear ratios and without the one up 42 I will have similar to what I have now the lowest gear will just be 0.92 instead of 0.86 with a one up it would be 0.84. Obv having the advantage of max ratio being much higher with a 34.

Never ridden a 1x and never used a one up 42. Heard the gaps become bigger, some chains drop down from 42 to 36 and all that. Which setup would be the most beneficial with the least amount of problems?

Thanks [emoji1303]

If you are not a marathon racer there is absolutely no reason to have high gears , being that you ride a trance I am assuming you ride because you enjoy it and maybe do enduros, point is you don't wan to be dead at the start of the decent.

So get the 32 or if you can get a 30t for the front and maybe just put a 40t on the rear ( I keep mine standard cause these derailiuers were not made for such ratios) so you don't stretch the derrailiuer to much , point is climb comfortably and slog down the mountain like a Beast

High speed and high gear ratios are for 29er hard tail 90mm travel speed demons , just enjoy your ride and don't worry about all the technical jargon

this is just my opinion and just like ass-holes everybody has one.

Good luck with whatever you choose ;)

32 race face and 42 one up on mine, honestly have not found a climb I cant tackle, yes, you will work a little harder than you did on your old granny- which isnt a bad thing.

Its only on downs and fast flats where you might find spinning out at max speed; but I've never looked back, and as an alternative to replacing it with a extremely expensive (in my world) 1x11 set up it works really well. Ps check you have a rear d that can handle a 42 addition though.

My granny gear at the moment is a 30 upfront and the 36 rear. Which does really well for most hills so a 32 front and 42 rear will be easier than my current setup. Would rather put cash towards wheels/hubs or breaks than 1x11. Don't race so 1x10 will do just fine [emoji1303] the only speed I enjoy is going downhill when I'm out of the seat and usually off the pedals on most sections until I get more skilled. Thanks for the replies a 32 and a 40 one up could be a plan would be pretty similar to my setup now with double chainrings.

I have a 30 now with my 11-36 cassette and it works everywhere. Gotten fit enough to use it on climbs well and not crank too hard up the hills. So think going 32 may be a good option. 34 May just be a bit too hectic as iv only been riding a few months

if the 30 with the 36 works , order a 30t from rapide here https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/166440-rapid%C3%A9-narrow-wide-chainrings/

very very cost effective and if it currently works then you save on 800 +- for a gear extender

if you still feel you need it after a few rides order one by all means.

To give some point of reference , I ride 650b with a 30t and 11-36 cassette and only spin out at 50kp/h , keep in mind I handle high cadence quite well

Ah cool nice one BaGearA! Iv heard lots of guys mention that Rapide stuff on here is good. Not going to be using a chain guide so heard raceface is hard to beat with their N/W but for that price I can test it out, shot. I can handle 30/36 perfect for the rides I'm currently doing and all the hills. Probably won't spin out too easily either without bouncing around on the seat first [emoji1]

Don't go for raceface  , the reason i say so is a hard -anodized chainring is what you are looking for to get the best possible life out of it , Gold and Black are they only two colours in this world that can be hard-anodized and with raceface making all kinds I doubt they will hard anodize the gold and black

If you are in the price range of raceface praxis is the next best option(phenomenal quality ) and a more unique chain retention design also they are one of the few companies that cold forge they chainrings.

Again you don't have to follow my advice but I am trying to give the best posible advice so you can get the most chainring for your buck.

my Raceface is still happily trundling along after 4000+km; have heard great things of Praxis though.

Go sram steel chainring, it's has little bit of a weight penalty but only costs around r350 for a n/w and will last forever. U can get 2 different sizes for the price of 1 alloy ring if u are concerned about sizing.

Cheers for the replies guys. Will have a look at Praxis and SRAM and see what happens. Going to go for a 30t for now and when if I need a 32 I will get an extra and swap out as needed. Sticking with the 11-36 for now too.

Any places in SA (Cape Town) to get a Praxis chainring? Or online ordering the only way.

My "opinion" would be to go 32 Ovl and Sunrace 11-40 or 42 at the back, from Rapide, cheapest and probably the easiest option to get what you're looking for.

At least that's what i did, only exception is i bought the 32T Elliptical from Kalbo before Rapide stocked theirs.
