Hi Guys,

Stupid question(s)!!  .....but.....

Can you please explain to me what do the following mean??

Sizes 5.5 x 1
6 x 1.25
6.5 x 1.5
7.25 x 1.75
7.5 x 2
7.875 x 2
7.875 x 2.25
8.5 x 2.5

For instance....what does the 5.5 x 1 mean/indicate?

How do I know what type of rear suspension shock do I have on my bike??  There is no indication on the shock!! i.e...is it a 5.5 x 1 or is it a 7.5 x 2???....I am clueless and lost!!

Thanks!

The numbers are eye-to-eye length x stroke, measured in inches.

Eye-to-eye is measured between the centres of the mounting bolts at full extension, and the stroke is how much the shock compresses. To measure this, let all the air out and compress the suspension until the shock bottoms out, then measure how much it moved.

It's usually roughly the length of the exposed damper body, but can vary.

Thanks Droo!

So, I basically have to go and physically measure the length of my rear shock (eye to eye)....off or can I do it while it's still on the bike??

While this thread is here , can someone explain to me how rear suspension is measured because some bike say 170mm rear but the stroke of the shock is like 60mm ?

Please enlighten me :)

This comes down to the leverage ratio.

For example - if a bike has a leverage ratio of 3:1 and you have a shock with 50mm stroke, you have a 150mm travel bike.

This is because for every mm the shock compresses, the rear wheel moves 3mm.

That's it in simple terms.

You're not going to compress the shock off the bike, so leave it on.
