Mayor Mashaba to abandon bicycle lanes...

I don't get why they don't just decree that any new roads built must include a cycle Lane, and when repairing or re doing sections of road, they have to include it? Long term, the whole place would be set up with cycle lanes.

I'm no engineer or financial expert, but it makes the most sense in my little mind.

No, this is the current decree with regards to new developments. The developer is forced to pay for intersection/access road upgrades resulting in sections of a stretch of road being 1st class for the legally required distance... and then being shitty single lane potholed crap in between these sections.

No consideration for traffic flow, or amount of vehicles per hour etc.

It frustrates the living crap when bottlenecks are just mmoved from one stretch to the next stretch...

Town planning is the biggest Joke in JHB at the moment.

Who gets a feeling it's a populist thing for Mashaba to say? I think Jozi is gonna regret this dude as a mayor...

How much savings will not having the bicycle lanes effect? They are part of the spatial plans for Jozi development already, right?

Mashaba also ducked out when this morning's meeting was adjourned to meet with EFF protesters who said they hadn't been paid as promised by the DA. Strange times ahead...

Correction there it was to meet with DA supporters who claimed they had not been paid. Mashaba did not duck out the meeting, the EFF demanded the house adjourn and that he meet with them. Turned out to be grand standing publicity stunt. But I guess we are going to see a lot more of this.

As Mashaba was about to give his speech, the EFF stood on a point of order. They wanted the house to be adjourned to allow Mashaba to walk out of the chamber and receive a memorandum from Democratic Allianceactivists, who claim they have not been paid by the party. An EFF councillor says they stand with the activists.“We will be with the workers. We’ll ensure that we support their struggles and issues.”It then emerged that the activists did not have a memorandum and Mashaba then had to walk back into the chamber.

I did say he ducked out when it was adjourned. But silly to adjourn a meeting because of it, don't you think?

The EFF would not let it proceed if he had not been told by the EFF to adjourn.

I have not read the whole thread, so sorry if I'm repeating or taking the topic off corse.

I've been working at the JSE of late, and I have been taking the Gautrain bus, so I walk from the Sandton Gautrain station to the JSE along West then Maude. I've been watching with interest the road pavement works going on, including the new cycle lanes.

While I really appreciate that they were doing something for cyclists, It's a pitty that the designs they have taken fall short in a number of ways. The biggest been that they fail to protect cyclist at the intersections.

This video shows a design very similar to what they have installed on West St, how it fails, and a much better way to do it.

and more on better designs:

I was contemplating writing to my ward counselor to try explain this, but now I guess it's a waste of time

You joking right,google EFF disrupts.

Google EFF fists fly...I did this morning, for research, after I read a Parly statement about the new security measures :-)

Not entirely encouraging that all the local government polls have really done is introduce red-overalled antics to another sphere of government...

...and given bicycle lanes another powerful political opponent...

Precisely why i think Mashaba thought it easier to entertain the EFF "demand" rather than not and give them additional coverage. The EFF most likely knew the protest had no weight, but were banking on their "demand" not been met so they can partake in the only thing they excel at. disrupt.

Thing is, that isn't Mashaba's call. Nor is it a good precedent for Da Gama to set.

So basically we're looking at a whole bunch of cool urban renewal thingies and new projects that will be hard to get to and between.

I'm ok with it. As Skubbara said earlier, pick your battles.
