1.87m rider is a large for some frames but XL for most. Then personal preference also comes into the decision.

You are, of course, correct.  

 

But body peculiarities play a major role, so fit is a very particular, personal thing.

 

My point was merely to illustrate that sizing is not rigid (height) but that there are many variables to be considered for fit and even more for comfort / set-up. 

 

If you put a newb on the "wrong" bike, they simply won't know...and that could put them off cycling completely.

Only L and M in stock. I'm 1.84 and the L was a bit too small for me...definitely would have needed the XL, so at 1.87, OP as well
