It depends on the GPS unit used - mine uses a course (.crs) file. I load the target time for the ride, and it will show me the time to the finish, as well as other bits of info.

 

This is particularly useful when trying to get a group to the finish at/under a certain time, and pacing is important.

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you guys do with the route once it is loaded into your GPS units? I always just thought it was to be able to train the route beforehand, but loading it up this close to the event makes me wonder. Do you have the route loaded on the day? If so, what are the advantages?

Its pretty handy if you want to train the route beforehand and live out of town. Most smart trainers will allow you to create your own route based on the info in that file.
