Hi guys

We have recently moved down from Jhb to Somerset West.

I have a 2 year old and we used to do a bit of mountainbiking with him in his Thule seat.

Do someone know of any nice and basic mtb trails/routes in the Somerset West area where we could go for a ride which is basically risk free. I really do not want him to fall because I lost control of the bike.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

have you tired a few laps of southeys vines?

what about going to stellies on the farm roads ? Join the wannabees and use their routes that are on the stellenbosch side of the R44

The wannabees is the place you are looking for, 99% is child/amateur friendly. Check their website, wannabees.co.za just be warned their have been quite a few attempted and successful attacks on the trails in the past month. I've stopped riding with my wife there.

That is a bit harsh lerouc. They had a sting operation and caught the buggers!

And It was only one or two sections. Their network extends well beyond that. The bits around the longridge side of the R44 are fine.

I agree, the eastern side is a lot more "technical" than the west. i actually dont go that side because the last couple of times i was there (a while ago) it wasn't maintained that well, but i have heard that errol has been doing maintenance there.

On the subject of the sting, a group of tsotsi's was caught that robbed a police man in his car in the waterworks vicinity. From the reports form the different attempted highjackings it wasn't just one group of guys some were "younger" "kids" and was on the northern side of the waterworks. I have yet to hear that any bicycles was recovered or that they are definitely the guys that did the robbery.

I am just one of those guys that are rather on the safe side than on the *** side. i still use some of their trails but thats just because it runs through my driveway.

Start with a Southey Vines ride (situated in Dummer Road). The loop is really nice for building up basic skills.

Then progress forthwith to Helderberg Farm and do the blue trail, consisting mainly of Granny's Forest and Highway 61.

Southey's is ideal to start, Its only 3km tho so does possibly get boring.

Helderberg farm is nice but stick to blue or less can get super technical higher you go.

Jonkershoek circle route is also nice ride, dirt road about 15km with river half way.

No its not harsh. It's a reality.

My mates were mugged (attempted mugging rather) by kids. These kids obviously live on one of the farms. They are probably still there. The peeps that were caught were from macassar area. They were not these kids.

My wife and a couple of other ladies have stopped riding there, and I don't see them going back.

I meant it was a bit harsh to critisize the entire of the Wannabee route as dangerous.

As you know, it is made of several sections. The attacks were only on the route near the water towers. All the other sections are safe and perfectly fine to ride.
