Brakes and wot wot!

Hi everyone.

Im wanting to get my Avalanche back on track, its been a while and she has been through a bit. I'm no crazy mtb'er, just used it for short trips and some riding with my boy.

Forgive my ignorance regarding part names etc. So here goes, its a Avalanche Alpine with front and rear cable disc brakes, 9 speed cassette and a 3 speed crank. The brake handles and the shifters are all in one units, that over time have gone to crap. So I would like to replace these, if I cannot get them, would separate shifter and brake levers work? The brand is Shimano, so would it be okay to replace it with another brand?

Also, my front disc brake, on the actual caliper, one of the flanges or ends has snapped. Are there still any replacement parts for these or would I have to save up and go for the hydraulic units....

Thanx

Yes, separate units will work and you can replace the the brake levers with another brand if you decide to buy separate components.

For the tipe of riding you want to do just replace the broken caliper with a another cable caliper. It will be much cheaper than going the hydraulic route.

I have a set of cable brake/shifters (Shimano Deore M590 3X9).

Stupid question, does this mean it is the brake lever and the shifters in one unit? If so I will take it.
