XT M8000 chain on XT 785 chain rings.

The thread name says it all basically.

Currently the setup is XT M785 2x10 speed.

Some parts need to be renewed and the itch it there to upgrade a bit.

Plan:

Just to upgrade the rear derailleur, cassette, chain, rear shifter to 11-speed components.

Still have new spare XT M785 chain rings in my parts bin.

Will there be a problem running the  11-speed chain  on the XT M785 10-speed chain ring?

Thanks in advance.

(Sorry if this has been covered before, I searched, but failed to find info)

Nope, AFAIK the only potential problem would be at the rear: at the cassette. Thus as long as you are running a 11 speed cassette the m8000 chain should be fine. Shifting at front won't be 100%, but close enough.

Get the 11-46 and go 1x. Problem solved for the price of one chainring.

Thanks Droo and Koei  for the input.

11-46T is the plan.

I can  do 1x.

Have quite a few narrow/wide chain rings of various  sizes.

But

I forgot to mention . . . .

I am a bit bored  with my geared FS bike. (1st world problem, I know)

So by keeping the XT M785 28/38T crankset,  I want to see how very slow I can go with 24T front and 46T at the back.

No hill will be to steep.

Perhaps grip and balance  will  be the limiting factors and not my legs.

And when I actually  want to get somewhere  I still  have the option shifting to the  38T upfront, not limited to a 32T or 34T.

Chain length and derailleur parameters might be some obstacles

No....the chain will fit. All 9,10 and speed chains have the same inner width. However when used as part of a 1x system a NW chainring retains the chain better than a standard ring with no FD

If you plan keeping it as 2x10 with new 11 spd chain, cassette and RD then the front shifting might need adjusting because the 11 speed chain is slightly narrower across the outer plates than a 10 spd.
