MTB shifters on a road bike

I upgraded my dad's hybrid bike (road bike with flat mtb handle bars - because he has 'nothing to prove anymore' apparently) from a 8spd to 10spd drivechain

I've got 10spd SLX mtb shifters with the rest (derailleurs, chain and cassette) all being 10spd Shimano 105.

I've found that the mtb shifters shift too much per click and skip gears and the chain gets to the bottom of the cassette before i've clicked through all of the gears, as if it's expecting a wider cassette.

Is there a way I can get this to work? What about if I got a mtb specific cassette? or would a mtb derailleur make it work?

Many Thanks

Need an MTB derailleur. The ten speed MTB shifter and ten speed road derailleur are not compatible, as you see the cable pull is too much.

But don't the shifters determine how much the cable is pulled?

Yes they do but the RD geometry dictates how much it moves in relation to the amount of cable being pulled or released.

The road and MTB derailleurs have different geometries - this is what you are experiencing.

Ok thanks, that makes sense. So are you quite confident it'd work with the 105 chain and cassette if I just replace the 105 derailleur with a mtb one?

That is 9 speed though...? IIRC the 9 speed stuff was never an issue, only when they went 10 speed did everything go belly up for compatibility.

The cassette and chain should not pose an issue...

Yep, 9 speed road and with 9 speed MTB shifters are compatible.

Ok thanks. Since I already have the shifters I'd prefer to go the derailleur route, I think finding a derailleur would be easier than finding those specific shifters for a flat bar. Just want to be 100% sure it's going to work before buying a mtb derailleur

my wife has a cheap no name mtb derailer on her road bike, and it works perfect.

I installed a bigger cassette (12 28) and her road derailer was unable to handle it.

Took it in to the lbs, and they sorted it out, quick quick.
