Brickles - do you want to race, as in compete for position, or just take part? If the latter, I'd suggest the new Anthem / Spark / Camber which have slightly more relaxed angles, longer travel and will be more comfortable over longer distances and technical terrain.

If racing & competing and trying to be as fast as possible, then something like the ViPa / SpeedFox / Spark RC / Epic / Old Anthem would be a better bet. Also consider the Swift.

No use getting a racer if you're not actually racing for position. IMO a camber / new anthem / spark would be more suited to marathon & multi day events than the uber short travel race only weapons would be. They're more capable overall.

Pretty well, IMO. Giant frames are amongst the lightest. Their alu wizardry is fantastic. It's just the other components that let it down.

Also - don't let weight be the sole decider of which bike to go for. Suspension performance, geometry and fit should be the highest priorities.

So pretty well as in you would expect the Giant to be about the same or more?  or less?

I'd say you could expect the top tier anthem to be a bit less than that but not by much. Mid tier anthem probably around that weight.

I loved my Anthem's had a 2014 Anthem 1 2014 Anthem advanced and a 2015 Anthem 1. Also like the look of the Vipa but what put me off was the little tyre clearance at the back even with just a 2.2. The new Merida 96 looks sweet best thing will be to test all on your list and see which is your best fit /feel.
