11 Speed on 2011 Scott R3

I have a 2011 Scott R3 in fantastic condition currently running a 10 speed SRAM force groupset. The frame was way ahead of it's time, being lighter than the majority of modern day frames. It's got a lot of Kms on it and is still in fantastic condition!

As the cable routing is external, I decided to purchase an etap upgrade kit so that I can run electronic shifting and not have an issue with cables.

Last night I mounted everything and commenced with the derailleur setup. The wheel with an 11 speed cassette fits in the dropouts, but the derailleur appears to move over too far towards the spokes. When changing between gears, the derailleur almost seems to twist, throwing the alignment out from top to bottom gears. At first I thought it was the hanger, so I replaced that with a spare - made no difference.

Has anyone else had an issue upgrading one of these Scott frames (r2, r3 etc.) to 11 speed? Is it simply a design issue where the angle of the hanger relative to the wheel works for 10 speed, but due to the tighter tolerances of 11 speed, it causes issues?

Anyone have any ideas?

Adjustment screw? Like all other derailleurs?

There are tons of resources on Youtube on eTap, so perhaps there's a nugget in there to help you.

good luck with the new toys

I set Etap up on my Venge with no problems, but for some reason, the rear derailleur doesn't align on my Dad's Scott.

I don't think the 2011 Scott was designed to run with 11 speed components - I think the spacing is too tight.

After doing a bit more tinkering, it appears that it is in fact the rear derailleur that is at fault.

I have tap on my bike and had no problems setting it up. Took the other rear derailleur and fitted it to my frame - same problem. Tried 3 frames, 3 sets of wheels and 3 cassettes and still no luck.

Think I'm going to have to send the derailleur back for a warranty replacement.

Glad you managed to diagnose the problem

Haha doesn't help me much as now I have to return the derailleur...

Would be great if it just worked like it was meant to!
