“I felt very bad today, but I am very happy for this win. It was looking like I wouldn’t be able to race tomorrow – all day it was full gas, with everyone attacking. I don’t know if the other riders saw the profile? Rafał Majka was the guy who put his trust in me today. I said to him not to be stupid – that we’ll go together, and if he had the legs he’d go. He worked for me and trusted my ability more than I did. I was actually dropped in the last climb, but just got back in the final kilometre. After that I did my best and am very happy with the victory.”

Team Coach, Patxi Vila, saw just how important teamwork was in getting Peter to the line. “Congratulations to Peter and the entire team for this victory. They all gave their absolute best today. We knew it would be a very tough stage for Peter – near his limits – with almost 3,000m of climbing. The pace was really fast from start and we controlled from the outset. Initially we pulled with Pelucchi and Saramontins, then Bodnar took over, followed by Burghardt and Poljanski. Finally Rafał Majka did a lot of work at the end, giving Peter the opportunity to do a great sprint. I have to say it was one of the nicest victories and it’s due to the dedication and hard work of the whole squad. We felt confident we could do it and everybody was committed and gave their best.”

I like him

He's a tactician and climbs like an angel

Has won Grand Tours and more to come

And very introverted with no flamboyance to entertain the populists

Who do you like, coppi?
