Hi. Were can I get some stats on how big cycling are in South Africa. In 2014 Moneyweb did a estimates and recon the value is R600m.

And what exactly do you mean with "how big"?

I think your best bet would be to contact the suppliers directly.

Normally they're willing to help if you are a honours/masters student.

The cycling market

It’s far more difficult to come up with exact numbers of cyclists, since the figure depends on who is classified as a cyclist. Reardon pitches the number at about 1m, including in this figure people who own a bike and ride with some regularity. “Between 200 000-300 000 cyclists are participating in events and we perceive this figure to have double-digit growth at the moment,” says Reardon.

He says cycling is becoming a major attraction for corporates. “Companies are arranging corporate days around cycling events and planning cycling trips away. There are a number of corporate cycles, like the Tour de Tuli, which offer the same networking opportunities that golf tours used to.”

Reardon points out that cycling is generally more inclusive of a company’s staff, too. “You might find that 10-20% of a company can actually play golf, while 70-80% are willing to do some kind of cycling, as it is perceived to be more accessible and less intimidating.”

Try to contact the three or four largest suppliers/agents in South Africa and ask them whether they can share their sale numbers as well as an approximate market share percentage. From there you will have to make a few assumptions, but I think that's as close as you'll get.

We have it as 500 000 lycra louts. Research data* from 2010/11 - of which 200-300 000 participate in some event or another.

 

Largest flocks of riders are in the big centra, duh, naturally

 

*Came from a document a serious multi-year sponsor in top tier cycling in SA had commissioned via a top-tier agency. Yellow colours.

 

*** at its peak, SA had 800 events per annum, reg'd through officialdom.
