Can anyone refer me to a link where I can read up on what works with what and what does not work with what.

Eg , does a Shimano chain chain work wit a SRAM casette etc.

Does Shimano shifters work with a SRAM casette provided both are the same in numbers ( 10 spd or whatever )

If my understanding is correct, shimano and sram cassettes and chains are interchangeable with each other as long as they are the same speed, i.e 10 speed chain and 10 speed cassette, shifters will work from either SRAM or shimano on these combinations, but you can't use a sram shifter on a shimano derailleur and vice versa.
