Let's not entice Gen to cardiac arrest and then have you follow it up with an actual one.

So I have a few dumb questions....so what is the vibe pre race? Handouts to fans like bottles and caps etc? Quite interested in what happens and how open the riders are to chatting etc.

It's pretty relaxed, spectators can walk amongst the the team trucks and stand right next to the bike mechanics and riders as they work / warm up, spectators and rider are separated by a rope thats all. At the big races like TDF it gets a bit crowded with lots of spectators so sometimes it can be difficult to get close....but at TdS its quite easy to mingle amongst the riders. The best time to go look for riders is at TT or prolog because then they all start at different times and its easier to get them on their own... Normal stages they all start at the same time and tend to warm up together and all move off at once.

Generally the riders just carry on with their routines like gold fish in a bowl, they tend not to engage in to much conversation unless its with people they know. Last year at the riders presentation i got to pose for a selfie with Sagan when my wife asked him if he would stop and pose with me... He was quite friendly but did not have time to stop n chat.

There is always a "caravan" of sponsors vechiles that drive on the route ahead of the riders and hand out stuff stuff...nothing exciting tbh. I would rather walk amongst the team trucks and watch how they warm up and look at the bikes close up.

One year at TDF Prolog in Monaco we stayed in the same hotel as LA...LOL was a pure fluke we booked the hotel not knowing some of the teams would be staying there and on the day we arrived I saw all these Astana cars parked in the parking and there was one LA's bike on top of one of them... saw him a few times in the hotel foyer and he was always polite but distant..... Yes i was a big LA fan boy.

Thats the great thing about cycling, its not like Formula one and Moto GP where you have to be very lucky and rich to afford a ticket to get close to the action.
